Levels of Force

The Levels of Force

Washington state law states that self-defense is the use of reasonable force. In the United States, military police are taught that there are 5 levels of force that should be used to de-escalate confrontation. In civil cases these levels of force have been used to determine whether or not a person used reasonable force. In a dangerous situation one must always use the level of force appropriate for the situation.

1. Verbal - A person should use verbal communication designed to resolve the situation peacefully.

2. Physical Force - One should try to over power the person physically if possible.

3. Non-Lethal Weapon - The use of a staff or some other weapon that is not a killing weapon.

4. Lethal Weapon - The use of a knife or some other weapon that is intended to seriously injure or kill.

5. Gun - Guns should be used only to protect ones self or others.
